  • The most common soil type in Georgia is ultisol (red clay)
  • Red clay is typically nutrient-deficient, but pine trees tend to grow well in it.
  • Kaolin is another well-known Georgia resource. Kaolin (also known as "china clay" is used in manufacture of paint, paper, cosmetics and many other consumer goods.
  • "Sugar dirt" is a fine, sandy mix sometimes found in areas east & south of Athens, GA. Sugar dirt does not compact well, so it is a great amendment for lawns and gardens made up of heavy red clay.
